Dana Katherine Scully was born in Annapolis, Maryland in February 1964. She is the third child, and second daughter, to William and Margaret Scully. She was raised a Catholic, and can regularly be seen wearing a gold cross as a symbol of her faith. Due to her father's Naval career, she spent a lot of time on military bases as a child. 

She obtained a degree in physics from the University of Maryland, and attended medical school at Stanford. However, despite her parents wanting her to pursue a career in medicine, Scully decided this wasn't what she wanted, and joined the FBI. She had been with the bureau for two years before she was assigned to the X-Files, and to Agent Fox Mulder. She was there to provide a scientific, and rational approach to the often "out there" theories Mulder believed to be true.
